Black Mondo Grass – The Little Plant That Packs a Punch
If you want a plant that quietly transforms your garden without demanding constant attention, Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’) is it.
This tough little groundcover isn’t about big flowers or showy foliage. Instead, it brings drama with its jet-black, strappy leaves that look good all year round. Plant it in the right spot and it will reward you for years with very little effort.
Where It Works Best
Black Mondo Grass is ideal for edging garden beds, lining a path, or planting en masse under trees where not much else will grow. It’s slow growing, but once established it forms neat clumps about 20cm tall and wide.
It handles both full sun and part shade, though the darkest leaf colour comes with more sunlight. In really hot, dry spots it’ll appreciate a bit of afternoon shade.
Soil and Watering
Like most plants, it prefers a soil that drains well. Add compost or organic matter before planting to help it settle in. Water it regularly while young, but once established it’s pretty forgiving and drought tolerant.
Flowers and Fruit
Through summer, small lilac-coloured flowers appear close to the leaves. These are followed by shiny black berries that match the foliage. They’re not the main show, but they add to its charm.
Maintenance
This is a very low-maintenance plant. Give it a tidy-up once a year by cutting back old foliage in late winter. A handful of slow-release fertiliser in spring will keep it looking fresh.
