If you want colour in your garden without the fuss, you can’t go past Gazania ‘Double Gold’. This little groundcover is one of the hardest-working plants you’ll find.
What Makes It Special
Gazania ‘Double Gold’ is a low, spreading groundcover that smothers itself in golden-yellow daisies almost year-round. The flowers open in the sun, close at night, and keep coming even in tough conditions. It’s bred to be sterile, which means it doesn’t set seed — so instead of putting its energy into reproducing, it just keeps flowering.
Where to Plant It
This gazania loves the sun. Plant it in a hot, dry spot where other plants sulk, and it will thrive. It spreads quickly to about 50–60cm across, making it great for covering bare ground, filling banks, or cascading over retaining walls.
It also works well in coastal gardens, handling salt spray and sandy soils without a worry.
Soil and Watering
Gazania ‘Double Gold’ isn’t fussy, but it does need good drainage. Sandy or gravelly soils are perfect. Once established it’s very drought tolerant, only needing the occasional deep water in long dry spells.
Maintenance
There’s almost nothing to do. A light trim once or twice a year will keep it neat and encourage fresh growth. Feed it with a slow-release fertiliser in spring if you want to give it a boost, but it will soldier on without it.
