How Can I Make My Garden Grow Faster? What Actually Works (and What Doesn't)
You plant a new garden on Saturday.
By Sunday morning, you’re outside checking it.
Monday: still the same size.
Wednesday: surely that one's grown?
Two weeks later you're considering fertiliser, seaweed, compost, another fertiliser, talking nicely to it and possibly moving the entire garden 40cm to the left.
New gardens require a level of patience nobody adequately warns you about.
So let's answer the question gardeners actually want answered:
Can you make plants grow faster?
Yes — to a point.
But plants have genetic limits. A naturally slow-growing shrub isn't going to become a rocket because you bought the most expensive bottle in the fertiliser aisle.
What you can do is remove the things holding a plant back and create conditions that allow it to grow as well as it naturally can.
And surprisingly, that has far less to do with constantly feeding it than most people think.
First, what actually controls how quickly a plant grows?
Plant growth is the result of several things working together: genetics, temperature, light, water, nutrients, soil conditions and the health of the root system.
Change one of those and growth can change too.
That's why the same variety can grow beautifully in one garden and sit there doing almost nothing in another.
It also explains why asking, “How fast does this plant grow?” doesn't always have a neat answer.
A plant growing in suitable soil with adequate moisture and light may perform very differently from the same plant sitting in compacted soil, receiving the wrong amount of sun and alternating between bone dry and soaking wet.
So if you want faster growth, don't start with fertiliser.
Start with the growing conditions.
Healthy roots are where fast growth really begins
We spend most of our time admiring the half of the plant we can see.
The important stuff is happening underneath.
Roots anchor the plant, absorb water and nutrients and explore the surrounding soil. A healthy, expanding root system gives the plant access to more resources, which can support more growth above ground.
That's why the establishment period matters so much.
When you plant tubestock, for example, you're starting with a small root system. Your job isn't to force enormous top growth immediately. It's to create conditions that encourage those roots to move out into the surrounding soil.
Once that starts happening, the plant has a much bigger engine behind it.
If root growth is restricted by waterlogging, compaction, unsuitable soil conditions or repeated severe drying, no amount of enthusiastic fertilising above ground can completely compensate for it.
Water deeply enough to reach the roots
One of the easiest ways to slow a new garden down is inconsistent watering.
New plants don't yet have roots extending far into the surrounding soil, so they're much more dependent on moisture close to the original root ball.
A quick splash from the hose can make the surface look beautifully wet while leaving the root zone surprisingly dry.
Instead, check what is happening underneath.
After watering, move the mulch aside and investigate the soil. Did the water actually penetrate into the root zone?
This is especially useful while you're learning your soil.
Sandy soils and heavy clay behave very differently. Weather matters too. A hot, windy week can dry a site much faster than mild, humid conditions.
There isn't one watering schedule that's correct for every Australian garden.
The soil is a better guide than the calendar.
But more water does not mean more growth
Here's where gardeners get caught.
The plant looks slow, so we water it.
Still slow?
More water.
Still slow?
MORE WATER.
Eventually the poor thing is sitting in soup.
Roots need oxygen as well as moisture. If a soil remains saturated and oxygen availability around the roots becomes limited, plants that aren't adapted to waterlogged conditions can struggle.
So the goal isn't maximum water.
It's appropriate moisture for the plant and soil.
This is one of the reasons good drainage matters so much when you're trying to establish a garden quickly.
Does fertiliser make plants grow faster?
Now we're getting to the good stuff.
Plants require nutrients, and if growth is being limited by a nutrient deficiency, providing the appropriate nutrient can certainly improve plant performance.
But fertiliser isn't plant Red Bull.
Adding more than the plant needs doesn't automatically produce more growth.
Plants can only use nutrients when the rest of their growing conditions allow them to. If the root system is unhealthy, the soil is waterlogged, the plant is receiving insufficient light or it's simply the wrong season for active growth, more fertiliser may achieve very little.
Excessive fertiliser can also damage plants.
And with Australian natives, fertiliser selection deserves particular care because some species are sensitive to high phosphorus levels.
Feed appropriately for the plant you're growing rather than working on the theory that if a little is good, three handfuls must be spectacular.
Gardening has disproved that theory many times.
What about seaweed solutions?
This is worth separating from fertiliser because the two are often treated as interchangeable.
Seaweed-based products are commonly used around transplanting and plant establishment, but depending on the product, they may not provide the same nutrient profile as a complete fertiliser.
Always read the label and understand what you're actually applying.
The larger lesson is useful beyond seaweed:
Know what problem you're trying to solve before reaching for a product.
If a plant isn't growing because it receives four hours less sunlight than it needs, no bottle is going to move the sun.
Sunlight is plant fuel
Plants use light during photosynthesis to produce sugars that fuel growth and other processes.
Which means the amount and intensity of light a plant receives can have a huge effect on how it performs.
But more sun isn't universally better.
A plant adapted to shaded conditions may become stressed in intense sun, while a full-sun plant growing in deep shade may become weak, sparse or stretch towards available light.
This is why putting the right plant in the right place isn't just about keeping it alive.
It's how you get good performance.
If you want a garden to establish quickly, stop asking plants to tolerate the site and start choosing plants capable of thriving in it.
That's a very different standard.
Soil compaction can quietly slow everything down
This is one people often don't notice.
Particularly around newly built homes, soil can have been driven over, excavated, moved and compacted during construction.
From the surface it might look like ordinary dirt.
To a plant root trying to move through it, it can be closer to concrete.
Compaction can restrict root growth, alter drainage and reduce the air spaces within soil.
Before planting a new garden, investigate what's underneath rather than simply covering poor soil with mulch and hoping nobody notices.
Good soil preparation isn't particularly glamorous.
But neither is replacing a garden because nothing grew.
Mulch can help create better growing conditions
Mulch doesn't directly make plants grow at some magical accelerated rate.
What it can do is help create a more stable environment around them.
Appropriate mulch can reduce evaporation from the soil surface, moderate soil temperature and suppress some weed competition.
Those things can make life considerably easier for a developing plant.
Keep mulch away from the immediate crown or stem rather than piling it against the plant, and remember to check what's happening beneath it.
Mulch can look damp while the soil underneath is dry.
It can also look dry on top while the soil below remains beautifully moist.
Again: investigate.
Gardening gets much easier when you stop guessing.
Weed control is one of the cheapest growth boosters you've got
If you're trying to establish tubestock through a large landscape, don't underestimate weeds.
A young plant surrounded by established weeds is competing for water, nutrients, light and root space.
You can fertilise the plant all you like.
The weeds will happily send a thank-you card.
Keeping the area immediately around young plants reasonably free from competition can make an enormous difference during establishment.
This is particularly important with mass planting, slopes and larger landscape projects where weeds can quickly overtake small plants.
If you want a garden to look established quickly, plant WIDTH
This is where we move from horticulture into design.
Sometimes people don't actually need the individual plants to grow faster.
They want the garden to look fuller faster.
That's a different problem.
And this is where mature spread becomes enormously important.
Take a plant such as Hardenbergia Meema™. It's relatively low but can spread to around two metres wide.
That's a lot of garden being visually occupied by one established plant.
Groundcovers such as Purple Fusion™ Scaevola, Aussie Rambler™ and Yareena™ Myoporum can perform a similar role in appropriate conditions, while broader low-growing Westringias such as Mundi™ can create substantial foliage coverage.
Instead of only asking:
“What's the fastest-growing plant?”
ask:
“Which plant will eventually cover the amount of space I need covered?”
That question often produces a much better garden.
Don't plant twice as many plants just because you're impatient
This is the other temptation.
The recommended spacing is 80cm?
Let's put them at 40cm.
Instant garden!
And yes, closer planting can create visual coverage sooner.
But those plants don't stop growing when the photograph looks good.
If you've ignored mature size and significantly overcrowded the planting, you may eventually create more competition, poor airflow and a garden that requires thinning or constant pruning.
There is a balance between planting for immediate effect and planting for mature performance.
Personally, I'd rather look at some mulch for a while than spend the next decade removing every second plant.
Choose plants that naturally grow at the speed you need
Sometimes the simplest answer really is plant selection.
If rapid screening is important, choose an appropriately vigorous screening plant whose mature dimensions still fit the space.
If you need ground coverage, choose a spreading plant.
If you're landscaping a huge area, use plants suited to mass planting rather than trying to fill it with slow-growing feature specimens.
But be careful with the phrase fast growing.
Fast-growing plants become big plants quickly.
That's wonderful when you actually want a big plant.
Less wonderful when it's planted 30cm from a path.
The fastest hedge isn't necessarily the best hedge.
The fastest plant isn't necessarily the best plant.
The best plant is one that reaches the right size at a useful rate and then remains manageable.
Spring is not a universal starting gun
We're writing this in spring, which is when everyone understandably expects gardens to explode.
And many plants do begin actively growing as temperatures rise.
But Australia is enormous.
Spring in Wauchope is not spring in Hobart, Alice Springs or tropical Queensland.
Different species also respond differently to temperature and seasonal cues.
So don't panic because somebody on Facebook posted a photograph of their plant covered in new growth while yours is sitting there contemplating life.
Your garden has its own climate.
Watch it.
That's more useful than comparing it with somebody else's.
How long does it take for a new garden to look established?
There isn't a single answer.
Species, starting size, climate, planting density, season, soil, irrigation and maintenance all affect the result.
Some spreading plants can begin joining together relatively quickly under favourable conditions. Trees and larger structural shrubs may take years to create the scale you ultimately planted them for.
And that's okay.
A garden is one of the few things we build that is supposed to change after we've finished it.
You aren't installing the finished product.
You're installing the beginning.

Before buying another fertiliser, work through the fundamentals:
- Is the plant actually suited to the site? Check climate, sunlight, soil and drainage.
- Is water reaching the root zone? Don't judge moisture from the soil surface alone.
- Is the soil staying too wet? Roots need suitable oxygen conditions too.
- Can the roots physically grow into the surrounding soil? Compaction and poor soil structure can restrict establishment.
- Is the plant competing with weeds or turf? Young plants don't always win that battle.
- Is nutrition actually the limiting factor? Feed appropriately rather than automatically.
- Are you simply being impatient? This one is annoyingly common.

Anyone who has ever planted a garden has stared at it three days later and thought it should probably be doing more by now.

You planted it because you can already picture what it's going to become.
But gardening gets considerably easier when you stop trying to force growth and start creating the conditions that allow growth to happen.
Healthy soil. Healthy roots. Appropriate water. The right light. Sensible nutrition. Less competition. Plants that actually belong in the conditions you've got.
Get those things right and you probably won't need a cupboard full of miracle products.
Then comes the difficult horticultural technique nobody can sell you in a bottle:
Patience.
