Why Aren’t My New Plants Growing? How to Get Newly Planted Gardens Established Faster
You've planted the garden. You've watered it. You've checked it approximately seventeen times a day.
And... nothing.
The plants aren't dead. They aren't exactly thriving either. They're just sitting there looking remarkably similar to the day you planted them.
This is one of the most common worries we hear from gardeners, particularly with a newly planted garden. It's easy to assume that if a plant isn't immediately throwing out new leaves, something must be wrong.
Usually, that's not the case.
When we plant something new, we're looking at what's happening above the ground. The plant, meanwhile, has a much more important job to do below it.
Before a plant can become bigger, fuller and more drought tolerant, it needs to establish a root system capable of supporting all that new growth. And understanding that process changes the way you look after a new garden completely.
What does it actually mean when a plant is “established”?
We use this word constantly in horticulture.
“Water regularly until established.”
“Drought tolerant once established.”
“Feed after establishment.”
But what does established actually mean?
A newly planted plant begins with most of its roots contained within the original root ball. After planting, those roots need to grow out into the surrounding soil. As they do, the plant gains access to a larger reservoir of water and nutrients and becomes less dependent on the small area immediately around its original root system.
There isn't a universal number of weeks before this happens. Establishment depends on the plant, its starting size, the season, soil conditions, temperature, rainfall and how it is cared for after planting.
A small plant growing actively in warm soil may begin extending roots relatively quickly. A plant installed just before cold weather may appear to do very little above ground for quite some time.
That's why “I planted it six weeks ago and it hasn't grown” doesn't automatically tell us there's a problem.
The better question is: what condition is the plant in?
If the foliage is healthy, stems are sound and the plant isn't showing signs of ongoing decline, it may simply be getting established.
Roots usually matter more than what you can see
This is particularly important when planting tubestock.
People naturally compare plants by what they can see above the pot. A bigger plant feels like you're getting a head start.
Sometimes you are. But plant establishment isn't quite that simple.
A healthy smaller plant with a good root system can establish beautifully because once those roots begin moving into the surrounding soil, the plant can start building the infrastructure it needs for future growth.
That doesn't mean tubestock magically grows faster than every larger plant. Starting size, species, root quality and growing conditions all matter. What it does mean is that pot size alone isn't a very useful measure of what a plant will become once it's in the ground.
When we're looking at plants in the nursery, we're far more interested in healthy roots and active growth than simply producing the tallest plant possible in a pot.
You're not really buying the 50mm tube.
You're buying the plant it has the potential to become.
The planting hole matters — but bigger isn't always better
There's a surprisingly persistent idea that every plant needs an enormous hole filled with beautiful new soil.
It sounds logical. Give the plant a luxurious little pocket and surely it'll love you for it.
The problem is that you're not trying to grow a plant inside the planting hole. You're trying to encourage its roots to leave that hole and establish into the surrounding soil.
In many situations, the planting hole should be wide enough to accommodate the root ball comfortably and allow roots to move into loosened surrounding soil, while the final planting depth should generally leave the plant at approximately the same soil level it was growing at in its container.
Planting too deeply can create problems around the crown or stem base and alter the oxygen and moisture conditions around roots.
So don't automatically bury a plant deeper because it “looks safer” down there. Plants are not fence posts.
Soil preparation should also respond to the soil you've actually got. Sandy soil, heavy clay and a beautiful friable loam do not need identical treatment.
The goal is to improve conditions where necessary without creating such a dramatically different pocket around the root ball that the roots are reluctant or unable to move successfully into the surrounding soil.
One of the biggest establishment mistakes happens with water
New plants need water.
That part is easy.
How we water them is where things become more interesting.
A newly planted plant has a relatively small root zone, so initially we need to make sure water actually reaches that root ball and the surrounding soil. A quick sprinkle across the surface may make the garden look wet without getting enough moisture where the roots are.
On the other hand, constantly saturating the soil isn't automatically better.
Roots require both moisture and oxygen. In poorly drained soil, keeping the root zone permanently saturated can create an entirely different set of problems.
The aim is appropriate, thorough watering followed by allowing the soil conditions to behave in a way suited to that particular plant and soil type.
And that's why watering advice like “water every second day” can only ever be a rough starting point.
A plant in sandy soil during a hot, windy week might need very different attention from the same plant in heavy clay after 60mm of rain.
Use your finger. Dig into the soil. Learn what it feels like below the surface.
Your garden doesn't own a calendar.
Why frequent shallow watering can work against you
Imagine watering just enough to wet the top centimetre or two of soil every day.
The surface looks beautifully damp, so you assume the job is done. But deeper down, the soil around the root system may still be dry.
A more useful approach in many garden situations is to water thoroughly enough to wet the root zone, then monitor the soil before watering again.
As plants establish and their roots explore a larger volume of soil, watering practices can usually change too.
That's what we're ultimately trying to create: a plant with roots capable of finding moisture beyond the tiny root ball it arrived with.
It's also why “drought tolerant” plants still need establishment watering.
A Lomandra, Westringia or hardy native doesn't arrive with a two-metre root system folded neatly inside its tube. It has to grow one.
“Drought tolerant once established” is a useful phrase.
Just don't ignore the last two words.
Mulch is brilliant. Volcanoes are not.
A layer of mulch around newly planted gardens can help moderate soil temperature, reduce evaporation and suppress some weed growth while plants establish.
But mulch doesn't need to be piled against the stem of the plant.
Keep it back slightly from trunks, crowns and stems rather than building the famous mulch volcano.
Apart from moisture sitting against plant tissue, thick mulch directly over a small plant's root ball can also make it harder to work out whether the soil underneath is actually wet.
And here's another little trick: water the soil, not the mulch.
If you're hand watering, occasionally move some mulch aside afterwards and check how deeply the water actually penetrated.
You might be surprised.
Should you fertilise newly planted plants?
This is another situation where enthusiasm can get us into trouble.
The plant isn't growing, so we think:
It needs food.
Then out comes the fertiliser.
More growth! Quickly!
Except fertiliser isn't a cure for every struggling plant.
If the real problem is poor drainage, dry roots, planting depth, root damage or unsuitable conditions, throwing fertiliser at it doesn't solve the underlying issue.
In some circumstances, excessive fertiliser can make matters worse.
The right feeding program depends on the plant, soil, season and products being used. Some Australian native plants also have particular sensitivities to phosphorus, making appropriate fertiliser selection important.
Rather than feeding automatically because a plant looks unhappy, diagnose the reason first.
A hungry plant and a drowning plant can both look fairly unimpressive.
They require completely different solutions.
Why do newly planted plants sometimes wilt in the afternoon?
This can be alarming.
You plant something beautiful in the morning. By 3pm it looks like it has reconsidered its entire existence.
Hot weather increases water loss through leaves, and a newly planted root system may not yet be able to replace that water as efficiently as an established plant.
Some temporary afternoon wilting can occur under stressful conditions, but persistent or severe wilting deserves investigation.
Check the soil around the actual root ball rather than assuming it needs more water. The soil may be dry — or surprisingly wet.
Also consider heat.
A plant beside a western wall, dark fence, concrete path or driveway may experience much higher temperatures than the weather forecast suggests.
“Full sun” on a plant label doesn't mean every full-sun location is identical.
Why has my plant stopped growing after planting?
Sometimes the answer is simply season.
Plant growth responds to temperature, day length, moisture and the natural growth cycle of the species.
Not every plant grows continuously throughout the year.
If you plant something just as its growth is naturally slowing, it may sit quietly for months before producing an obvious flush.
This is especially important when comparing two plants in different parts of Australia. A gardener in subtropical coastal NSW may see a completely different establishment pattern from somebody growing the same plant in a cold inland climate.
Australia doesn't have one gardening season.
It has an absurd number of them.
That's why local conditions should always beat generic instructions.
Weed competition matters more than people realise
This one is particularly important for large tubestock plantings.
A tiny new plant surrounded by vigorous weeds is competing for light, moisture, nutrients and space from day one.
And the weeds have usually got a head start.
Keeping the immediate area around young plants reasonably free from competition during establishment can make an enormous difference.
This is one reason site preparation matters so much when mass planting banks, revegetation areas and large landscapes.
Putting 200 tubes into an existing jungle of weeds and hoping the plants sort it out amongst themselves isn't really an establishment plan.
It's plant-based Hunger Games.
Don't forget wind
We talk constantly about sun and water, but wind can be brutal on newly planted gardens.
Hot, dry winds increase moisture loss. Strong winds can also physically move taller plants before their roots have anchored into the surrounding soil.
In exposed areas, plant choice matters enormously. So does establishment watering.
This is another reason we don't particularly love universal watering rules.
Thirty degrees, humid and still is not the same growing condition as thirty degrees with a hot westerly belting across the property.
The thermometer only tells part of the story.
How long should a new garden take to fill out?
This is the question everyone really wants answered.
And unfortunately the horticulturally responsible answer is:
It depends.
I know. Terribly helpful.
Fast-growing groundcovers can begin changing the appearance of a garden relatively quickly under good conditions. Shrubs and structural plants may take longer. Some species establish quietly before producing a noticeable growth flush.
Climate, season, plant spacing and starting size all influence how quickly a garden visually fills.
But there is something worth remembering when you're staring at all that mulch after planting:
The gaps are supposed to be there.
If you plant everything according to how big it is today, you'll probably end up with an overcrowded garden later.
Plant for mature size.
Let the garden look young for a while.
That's because it is young.
There is no horticultural law requiring a garden to look 10 years old on Saturday afternoon.
Seven things I'd check if a new plant isn't growing
Before replacing it, fertilising it or watering it for the fourth time today, have a look at these:
- Soil moisture: Check below the surface and around the actual root ball. Is it genuinely dry, comfortably moist or saturated?
- Drainage: Does water disappear reasonably after rain or irrigation, or does the plant sit wet for prolonged periods?
- Planting depth: Has the plant been buried significantly deeper than it was in the pot?
- Light: Is it receiving the amount of sun or shade the species actually requires?
- Weather: Has it been extremely hot, cold, windy or otherwise stressful since planting?
- Competition: Are weeds, turf or established tree roots competing heavily around it?
- Plant condition: Is it actually declining, or is it healthy and simply not producing obvious new top growth yet?
That last question saves a lot of perfectly good plants from unnecessary interference.
Sometimes gardening requires doing something.
Sometimes it requires leaving the poor plant alone for five minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for a newly planted plant to establish?
There is no fixed establishment period. Plant species, starting size, season, soil, climate and watering all affect how quickly roots grow into surrounding soil. Smaller plants may establish differently from advanced plants, and visible top growth isn't the only indicator that establishment is occurring.
Why is my newly planted plant not growing?
A plant may be developing roots, experiencing seasonal slow growth or adjusting to new conditions. However, poor drainage, insufficient water, incorrect light, planting depth, extreme weather and root problems can also slow growth. Check the growing conditions before assuming the plant needs fertiliser.
Should I water new plants every day?
Not automatically. Watering frequency should respond to plant type, soil, temperature, rainfall and root-zone moisture. The important thing is that the root ball receives adequate water without keeping unsuitable plants permanently saturated.
Should I fertilise plants when I plant them?
It depends on the plant, soil and fertiliser being used. Fertiliser should not be used as an automatic treatment for a plant that isn't thriving. Diagnose moisture, drainage, planting depth and site suitability first, and use products appropriate for the species.
Why are my new plants wilting even though the soil is wet?
Waterlogged soil can reduce oxygen availability around roots and interfere with healthy root function. Persistent wilting in wet soil can indicate a root-zone or drainage problem rather than insufficient water.
Is tubestock harder to establish than larger plants?
Tubestock requires appropriate establishment care, particularly because its initial root zone is small. However, healthy tubestock can establish very successfully when planted into suitable conditions and managed properly. Starting pot size alone doesn't determine long-term garden performance.
When can I stop watering newly planted plants?
Reduce establishment watering according to root development, plant species, rainfall, soil and weather rather than a fixed date. Even established plants may require supplementary water during prolonged dry or extreme conditions.
The part we'd really like new gardeners to know
A newly planted garden is not a finished garden.
It's the beginning of one.
For a while there will be mulch between the plants. Some things will grow faster than others. One plant will inexplicably take off while the identical one three metres away appears to be considering its options.
That's gardening.
Your job during establishment isn't to force everything to grow as quickly as possible. It's to give each plant the conditions it needs to build a healthy root system and become increasingly capable of looking after itself.
Get the site right. Plant at the right depth. Water properly. Control competition. Pay attention to the weather.
Then give it some time.
Because the really exciting bit isn't what that little plant looks like the day you put it in.
It's what happens once the roots leave the pot behind.
