Zen Grass® Zoysia – Low-Mow Lawn Alternative

Want the look of a lush green lawn without signing yourself up to mow it every Saturday? Meet Zen Grass®.

This is one of those plants that makes you rethink what a lawn actually has to be.

Ozbreed Zen Grass® is a low-growing, fast-spreading Zoysia bred to create a dense, beautifully undulating carpet of deep green foliage. Left largely unmown, it develops soft waves across the ground — a little like the incredible mossy-looking lawns you see in Japanese gardens — but without the painfully slow establishment associated with traditional Japanese temple grass.

And here's the really interesting part: once established, Zen Grass® generally only needs mowing around once or twice a year if you're growing it for that natural, rippled look.

So if you've got an area where conventional lawn feels like far too much work for the amount of actual lawn-related activity happening on it, this deserves a serious look.

A lawn you don't really have to treat like a lawn

Most lawns are essentially a permanent gardening job.

They grow up. You mow them down. They grow up. You mow them down. Summer arrives and apparently this becomes your weekend hobby.

Zen Grass® works differently.

Rather than trying to maintain it as a perfectly flat traditional lawn, you can allow it to grow naturally at around 10–20cm high, where it develops its characteristic wavy, rolling appearance.

It spreads laterally to form a dense ground layer, helping reduce opportunities for weeds to establish once good coverage develops.

For the natural Zen Grass® look, mowing can be as infrequent as once every one to two years. If you prefer something more manicured, it can also be mown more regularly like a conventional lawn.

Basically, you get to choose how much lawn you actually want to lawn.

Why is Zen Grass® different from Japanese Temple Grass?

This is where the breeding behind Zen Grass® gets interesting.

The beautiful rippled effect is often associated with Japanese Temple Grass (Zoysia tenuifolia), but traditional forms can be frustratingly slow to establish and recover.

Zen Grass® is Zoysia native hybrid 'ZOY01', an open-pollinated cross between Zoysia macrantha and Zoysia matrella. It was selected to give gardeners that beautiful undulating appearance while being much faster to spread and establish.

According to the breeder, Zen Grass® can fill in during a growing season from spring through autumn when conditions and planting density are suitable.

It also has good wear tolerance, is non-prickly and has been selected for toughness through drought, frost, heat and even flooding.

In other words, the relaxed appearance doesn't mean it's delicate.

Where would we use Zen Grass®?

Zen Grass® makes the most sense in those parts of the garden where you'd like the green carpet effect of lawn without needing a conventional high-use lawn.

Think front yards that are mostly there to look good, garden pathways, between and around pavers, courtyards, Japanese-inspired gardens, underneath suitable established planting, low-use backyard areas and broad garden spaces where you'd otherwise be staring at mulch or mowing grass you rarely walk on.

It's also particularly interesting beneath trees and in shaded courtyards, where fallen leaves can be raked from the surface.

One of our favourite uses is alongside more structured planting. Pair that rippled green ground layer with clipped shrubs, feature rocks, stepping stones or strappy foliage and suddenly the garden starts looking deliberately designed rather than simply “lawn with some plants around it”.

Where wouldn't we use it?

This bit matters.

Zen Grass® has good wear tolerance, but it isn't intended to replace conventional turf in every situation.

If this is the patch of lawn where the kids play backyard cricket every afternoon, everyone sits for weekend picnics or the footy gets kicked around constantly, we'd stick with a conventional lawn suited to that job.

Zen Grass® is at its best in lower-use and more passive areas where its undulating growth can be part of the garden.

Walking across it? Fine.

The dog having a run? Fine.

Turning it into the MCG every Saturday? Wrong plant, wrong job.

And that's the distinction we wish more people made when choosing plants.

Don't ask whether a plant is “good”.

Ask whether it's good for what you're asking it to do.

How quickly does Zen Grass® spread?

This is one of its biggest advantages.

Zen Grass® spreads horizontally and can develop into a broad mat around 1 metre wide, with plants eventually growing together to create continuous coverage.

For faster coverage, planting density can be increased. The breeder recommends approximately 7–9 plants per square metre, with closer planting where quicker coverage is required.

Spring through autumn is the preferred planting period because this gives the Zoysia its active growing conditions to begin spreading.

Planting density matters enormously here. Put a handful of plants across a huge area and they'll obviously take considerably longer to meet than plants installed closer together.

You're effectively choosing between spending more on plants now or waiting longer for the plants to do the filling.

Both can work.

An interesting trick: grow it through mulch

This one surprises people.

Zen Grass® can be planted into a mulched garden area and allowed to spread across the surface, rooting down as it travels.

The mulch helps suppress weeds while the plants establish, and the breeder has observed that Zen Grass® can develop an even more pronounced undulating effect when grown this way.

Eventually you get less “plants sitting in mulch” and more of that continuous green carpet.

For us, that's where Zen Grass® gets particularly interesting as a landscape plant rather than simply another lawn grass.

Sun, shade and tough Australian conditions

Zen Grass® has been selected for broad landscape toughness. It has strong tolerance to drought, heat and frost once established, and the breeder reports good performance in shade as well as survival through flooding.

It will grow in a range of soil types and has relatively low fertiliser requirements.

That doesn't mean you can plant it and immediately forget it exists.

New plants still have small root systems and require establishment watering. Allow approximately 4–8 weeks of regular establishment care, adjusting watering to your soil, weather and rainfall rather than blindly following the calendar.

Once those roots are established into the surrounding soil, you're dealing with a considerably tougher plant.

Does Zen Grass® stay green in winter?

In many areas, Zen Grass® maintains a deep green colour through both summer and winter.

Exactly how any Zoysia performs through winter will depend on local climate and conditions, so gardeners in colder areas should expect growth and appearance to respond to their local temperatures.

That's worth remembering whenever you see “Australia-wide” plant recommendations.

Australia is rather large.

Wauchope and Canberra do not have the same winter, no matter what the plant label would like us to believe.

Can you mow Zen Grass® like normal lawn?

Yes.

If you prefer a flatter, more conventional lawn appearance, Zen Grass® can be mown more regularly — approximately monthly or as required during active growth.

But personally, we think its natural growth is the interesting bit.

Allow it to develop those rolling green waves and it becomes something between a lawn and a groundcover.

That's what makes Zen Grass® different.

There are plenty of plants available if all you want is ordinary lawn.

How to plant Zen Grass®

Prepare the area by removing existing weeds and unwanted vegetation before planting. Good preparation now makes establishing a dense ground layer considerably easier than trying to battle established weeds afterwards.

Plant through spring to autumn where possible and space according to how quickly you want coverage. Water well at planting and maintain appropriate moisture while the new plants establish, generally over the first 4–8 weeks.

If you're using mulch, plant the Zen Grass® into the soil beneath it rather than simply dropping plants into the mulch layer. The plant can then spread across the surface and root as it travels.

Once established, allow it to develop naturally for the rippled Zen Grass® effect or mow it periodically if you prefer a flatter appearance.
