SPACE SAVER™ MELALEUCA ARMILLARIS
Low maintenance, Ideal for screening and boundary planting
Space Saver™Melaleuca armillaris‘Mela01’ PBR
Space Saver™ is a great narrow native plant that really shines in smaller spaces. Its fine-textured leaves and dense, columnar shape make it ideal for screening or boundary planting. It grows to about 2 to 4 meters high, with a spread of just 1 to 1.5 meters, which means it doesn’t take up much room horizontally but still adds plenty of height. This makes it perfect for tight spots where you want to add some vertical presence without the bulk.
It’s pretty low-maintenance and works well in full sun to part-shade. Space Saver™ is tough, handling everything from drought to frost, and is perfect for coastal areas with salt-laden winds. It’s also flexible with soil types, thriving in everything from sandy soils to clay and more moist conditions. It’s native to places like Victoria, NSW, SA, and Tasmania, so it’s right at home in a range of Australian climates.
In spring and summer, Space Saver™ produces clusters of cream-coloured flowers, which really pop against the dark green foliage. The new lime-colored growth adds another layer of interest throughout the seasons. Over 10 years of testing has shown it’s easy to grow with minimal pest issues.
Space Saver™ needs very little pruning in the first few years. Once it hits 2 to 3 meters, a little top pruning helps keep it in shape. For a thicker screen, trimming the sides every couple of years does the trick. If you want it to grow taller and more naturally, you can prune less often. It’s also a great choice for coastal windbreaks or as a tidy hedge, and if you want a cleaner, more compact look, a yearly trim works well. It’s a tough plant that’s survived floods and can really take some tough conditions once it’s established.
If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, reliable plant that adds height without taking up too much space, Space Saver™ is a solid choice. It’s perfect for tight spaces, narrow screens, or as part of a coastal garden.
