Callistemon citrinus Groundbrush™ – Groundcover Bottlebrush
Low. Tough. Red-flowering and genuinely ground-hugging.
Callistemon Groundbrush™ is a seriously useful Australian native groundcover, growing to only around 30cm high while spreading to approximately 70cm wide. It forms a dense, layered mat of foliage that hugs the ground, helps suppress weeds and provides excellent coverage over banks, slopes and tricky garden areas where you want something tough without adding height.
Groundbrush™ produces brilliant red bottlebrush flowers, with its strongest flowering displays generally occurring in spring and autumn. Unlike some bottlebrush varieties, it doesn't usually throw random flowers throughout the year, giving you two much more noticeable flushes of colour. The foliage is predominantly mid-green, with plants grown in colder, frost-prone areas often developing beautiful coppery tones through winter.
And this little plant is tough. It handles heavy frost, drought, humidity, coastal exposure and even periodically wet or poorly drained soils, making it a brilliant choice for Australian gardens where conditions aren't always perfect.
Why we love it
A bottlebrush that stays around 30cm tall opens up so many possibilities.
Use Groundbrush™ across slopes and embankments, let it spill around retaining walls, mass plant it through native gardens or use it along the front of garden beds where a taller Callistemon simply wouldn't work.
Its dense growth also helps shade the soil and reduce weed competition once established.
Perfect for
- Native and Australian-style gardens
- Banks and slopes
- Retaining walls
- Mass planting
- Front-of-border planting
- Roadside and acreage plantings
- Coastal gardens
- Low-maintenance landscapes
- Habitat and biodiversity gardens
The Plant Hub tip
Plant this one in groups.
One Groundbrush™ is lovely. A whole sweep of them knitted together across a bank or underneath taller native plants is where it really earns its keep.
You get green groundcover, bright red flowers, fewer exposed patches for weeds to invade and a garden that looks deliberately planted rather than like you're still waiting for it to fill in.
Small plant. Big landscaping potential.

Maintenance |
Water regularly while your plants establish and mulch well around them to help retain moisture and reduce weeds. For an extra-dense groundcover, Groundbrush™ can be given a good prune during its first year to encourage branching and create an even tighter canopy. Once established, it is a hardy, relatively low-maintenance plant. A light application of a fertiliser suitable for Australian natives can be used when required. Its moderate growth rate means it is fast enough to create useful coverage without becoming difficult to manage. |
|
Planting Rates |
Approximately 2–4 plants per square metre, or 2–3 plants per linear metre for denser coverage. |

This is an excellent question. Live plants require express freight, unlike other products, which may take a week or so to be delivered using non-express freight services. The Plant Hub uses couriers and Australia Post to ship orders. When your plants are dispatched, we will send you an email to let you know how they have been shipped, and you will also receive a ‘Track and Trace’ label number and a link to the relevant delivery website to track the progress of your delivery.
As we deliver 'live plants', we naturally want to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition. We only dispatch orders on Monday of each week (except public holidays) to ensure orders arrive that same week. The cut-off time for orders is 6 pm Sunday. Orders placed after this time will, in most cases, be shipped the following week.
Plants normally arrive during business hours within 2 to 3 days for metropolitan areas. In regional areas, it may take an extra day or so to arrive. If you have ordered plants and have been notified that your order has been dispatched, but has not arrived by Thursday afternoon, don't hesitate to contact our office to track down your order for you.
No, if you would like your order to go to a PO Box, we send your order to Australia Post; however, we ask that you pick up your plants the day they arrive at the Post Office, so you receive your plants in the best condition possible.
